Chemistry Revision That Works, and Revision That Only Feels Productive

Why re-reading fails

Reading a page you have read before feels like learning because it is easy and familiar. That familiarity is exactly the problem — the brain registers recognition, not retrieval, and the exam asks for retrieval. Students who revise this way are consistently surprised by their marks, because their confidence was measuring the wrong thing.

It is not that re-reading does nothing. It is that it does far less per hour than the alternative, and students reach for it precisely because it is more pleasant.

What to do instead, by strand

Inorganic — spaced recall

Close the book and write out what you remember of the chapter, then check and fill the gaps in a different colour. Repeat in three days, then a week, then a fortnight. The gaps shrink visibly, which is also the most motivating form of feedback in the subject.

Organic — conversions from memory

Write the starting material and the target, then produce the route with no reference. Reagents and conditions written above each arrow. Checking against the book afterwards is the learning step, not the writing step.

Physical — problems, timed

Not worked examples read through. Unseen problems attempted cold with a clock. Working written out fully, then marked strictly for method marks.

How to structure the last weeks

• Full past papers, timed, at least weekly — they reveal pacing problems nothing else does.
• An error log kept across papers, sorted by error type rather than by chapter.
• Short daily retrieval for inorganic, because it decays fastest.
• Deliberately revisit chapters that feel finished — those are the ones quietly decaying.

The part parents can help with

Ask what the revision produced, not how long it lasted. An hour that produced a filled page, a marked paper or a corrected error log did something. An hour that produced a highlighted textbook did much less, and the student is usually not aware of the difference.
