Qualifications are easy to state and weakly predictive. Three questions tell you more.

Updated 12 September 2026 · Delhi Home Tutor

The Class 11 maths tutor you want is one who will find the older gap rather than teach the current chapter over again. Ask how they would diagnose, how much of the session the student spends writing, and how they handle a student whose algebra is weak. Those three answers predict the outcome better than any credential.

The three questions

  • "How will you work out what is actually wrong?" The answer should involve watching the student work through recent papers, not setting a test. Anyone who says they will start with chapter one has not answered.
  • "How much of the hour will my child spend writing?" In maths this should be most of it. A tutor who talks for an hour is lecturing.
  • "What do you do if the calculus problem turns out to be an algebra problem?" A good answer describes running short algebra drills alongside the syllabus. A tutor who has not met this has not taught much Class 11.

That third question is the Class 11 question specifically. The algebra load steps up sharply this year and a large share of Class 11 maths difficulty is older algebra surfacing. A tutor who does not expect that will teach calculus into a gap.

What to tell them

The class and board, which chapters are causing trouble, what the last two papers looked like, and two or three workable slots. Bring the actual marked papers to the first session — they are far more informative than any description.

Also mention if the student is preparing for an entrance exam, because it changes the balance of the teaching and should be planned rather than assumed.

What matters less than it appears

Degree level on its own. Someone with an advanced qualification who has never taught the board paper can teach correct mathematics and let a student write answers that lose step marks. Board experience and diagnostic habit are the properties that predict marks.

Also, the number of students taught is less informative than what the tutor says about how they teach. Volume is not method.

The first six weeks

Judge on whether the tutor can name the specific weakness in one sentence, and whether written work is being marked. Marks lag by roughly a term and are too slow to be the only signal — these two are available early and are reliable.

Questions parents ask

Should we ask for a trial class?

Ask what the first session covers instead. A genuine diagnostic session is more informative than a rehearsed demonstration.

Is a tutor who teaches many subjects a bad sign?

At Class 11 and 12, be more careful. Senior maths is a specialism and generalists thin out at this level.

How soon should we expect improvement?

Behaviour changes in weeks; marks in about a term. Judge early on process, later on results.

What if we cannot find a good tutor locally?

Online widens the pool considerably and works well for maths from Class 9 upward.
