Class 10 chemistry rewards knowing things. Class 11 asks the student to calculate, to reason about mechanisms, and to hold a large amount of structured recall — three different skills, arriving together, in a subject that previously needed only one. The difficulty is usually the transition rather than the content.

The three changes
Physical chemistry becomes real calculation
The mole concept arrives early and everything downstream assumes it. A student who half-understands it will meet the same weakness in stoichiometry, then equilibrium, then Class 12 electrochemistry, each time believing it is a new problem.
Organic chemistry asks for reasoning
Not lists of reactions but why a reaction goes the way it does. Students who try to memorise organic in Class 11 build a habit that fails completely in Class 12.
Inorganic becomes a volume problem
Large amounts of structured factual material that needs spaced revision rather than a pre-test read. Class 10 habits do not scale to it.
The mole concept is the single most common point of failure in the whole two years. It arrives in the first weeks, it is deceptively simple, and a shaky understanding of it is the invisible cause of a large share of Class 12 chemistry difficulty. If Class 11 is going badly, check that first.
Why it looks sudden
Because the three changes coincide and because the first Class 11 assessment often comes after several chapters. A student can be steadily losing ground for two months and receive no signal until a test that covers all of it at once.
That is also why the marks appear to collapse rather than decline — the decline was invisible.
What to do
- Find out which strand is weak, rather than treating chemistry as one thing.
- Check the mole concept specifically, whatever the presenting problem is.
- Change the study method for inorganic to short spaced recall from the start.
- Get organic taught as reasoning, early, before memorising becomes the habit.
The good news
Caught in Class 11, this is a manageable adjustment — the student is learning a new way of studying rather than recovering lost ground. Caught in Class 12, the same work has to be done under board pressure with the syllabus still moving. The difference between those two situations is mostly a matter of noticing early.

Should we wait a term to see if it settles?
Better to check the mole concept now. If that is the issue, waiting a term makes it considerably more expensive to fix.

Almost never on the basis of one difficult term in Class 11. Diagnose first.
