A Class 11 student struggling with limits and derivatives is very often carrying an unclosed algebra problem from Class 8 or 9 — factorisation, indices, or manipulating expressions confidently. Calculus exposes that weakness rather than causing it, which is why additional calculus practice produces so little improvement.

Why calculus exposes old gaps
Calculus questions are algebra-heavy by nature. Differentiating a quotient requires confident manipulation; evaluating a limit usually requires factorising and cancelling; almost every problem ends in simplification. A student whose algebra is effortful will run out of working memory before they reach the calculus, and will experience that as "I do not understand differentiation".
They usually do understand differentiation. What they cannot do is carry the algebra while thinking about it.
How to tell
Watch the student work a problem rather than setting a test. The tell is where they slow down and where errors appear.
- Hesitation at factorising, not at the derivative rule.
- Errors in sign and in expanding brackets rather than in the calculus step.
- Correct differentiation followed by a wrong simplification.
- Reaching for the calculator on arithmetic that should be automatic.
A diagnostic test will not find this. It reports that the calculus question was wrong. Only watching the working shows that the calculus step was right and the line after it was not, which is a completely different problem with a completely different fix.
What actually fixes it
Two or three weeks of targeted algebra work, run alongside the school’s calculus rather than instead of it. Factorisation, indices, algebraic fractions, and the manipulation patterns that recur in calculus questions.
It feels like going backwards and parents sometimes resist it, particularly in Class 11 when time feels short. It is almost always faster than the alternative, which is repeating calculus explanations into a gap that is not where the explanation is aimed.
The Class 11 context
This is a common year for it to surface because Class 11 is where the algebra load steps up sharply and where the student can no longer compensate with care. It is also a good year to fix it, because Class 12 assumes fluency and offers no time to build it.
Questions parents ask
Is it not too late to go back to Class 9 algebra?
No, and it is usually a matter of weeks rather than months. The student is not relearning it from scratch — they are making it fluent.
My child says they understand in class and cannot do homework.
Classic signature of this. Understanding an explanation does not require carrying the algebra; doing a problem does.
Will more calculus practice help at all?
Some, slowly and inefficiently. Fixing the algebra first makes the same practice several times more productive.
How do we know it is algebra and not effort?
Watch one problem being worked. Where the hesitation falls answers it in a few minutes.
