Ninety days is enough to change the result substantially. It is not enough to do everything, and trying to is the mistake.

Updated 2 September 2026 · Delhi Home Tutor

With three months left, the winning move is to be ruthlessly selective rather than comprehensive. A student who masters the six or seven highest-weight chapters and can write them cleanly will outscore one who has revised the entire syllabus thinly. The temptation at this point is to start at chapter one and go through — that is the plan most likely to fail.

Sort the syllabus before touching it

Put every chapter in one of three boxes: strong, weak-but-heavy, weak-and-light. The middle box is where the ninety days go. The first box needs maintenance only. The third box — genuinely weak and worth few marks — should be consciously abandoned rather than half-attempted, which is the decision most students refuse to make and most lose marks to.

This sorting takes an hour with a past paper and a syllabus in front of you, and it is the highest-value hour of the whole three months.

What the weeks should look like

Weeks 1 to 4 — close the heavy weaknesses

Calculus and algebra usually dominate here. Work on method, not on volume: the student should be able to start an unfamiliar question, not merely follow a worked one. Two supervised sessions a week is the right shape.

Weeks 5 to 9 — past papers, timed

Whole papers, in one sitting, with a clock. This is where students discover that they know the maths and cannot finish, which is a completely different problem and needs a different fix. Marking must be strict on steps.

Weeks 10 to 13 — error log and consolidation

Every mistake from the timed papers goes into a single list, sorted by type rather than by chapter. Almost every student finds the same three or four errors repeating across every paper. Fixing those is worth more than any new chapter.

Step marks are the cheapest recovery available. Students who work mentally and write only the answer routinely lose a third of the credit on questions they got right. That habit can be changed in a fortnight and it applies across the whole paper.

What to stop doing

  • Reading solved examples. It feels productive and produces almost no ability to start a question.
  • Starting at chapter one. The syllabus is not ordered by importance, and the early chapters are usually already the strongest.
  • Collecting new material. At ninety days, another reference book is a delay tactic, not a resource.
  • Untimed practice only. Most Class 12 maths marks are lost to the clock, and untimed practice hides that completely.

The honest part

Ninety days of focused work moves a student a long way, and it does not usually move them from the forties to the nineties. Setting the target at a realistic and specific number keeps the plan intact when a bad test arrives in week five — and a bad test in week five is normal, not a signal to abandon the approach.

Questions parents ask

Is it too late to start tuition now?

No, but the brief changes. At this point a tutor should be triaging and drilling rather than teaching the syllabus from the start.

How many sessions a week at this stage?

Two or three, with at least one spent on a timed paper being marked strictly. More than three leaves no time for the solo practice that does the work.

Should we drop other subjects to focus on maths?

No. The same selective approach applies to each subject; abandoning one to rescue another usually just moves the problem.

My child panics in maths exams.

Timed practice is the treatment, and it works better than reassurance. Panic usually falls sharply once a student has finished three full papers inside the time limit.

What if the weak chapters are also the heavy ones?

Then that is the whole plan, and it is a good plan. Heavy chapters repay the effort at a rate light ones cannot.
