Home tuition fees in Delhi are driven by four things: the class, the subject, how many sessions a week, and how far the tutor travels. There is no single going rate, and any quote given before those four are known is a guess. What matters more than the number is what the fee includes — and that is where families most often fail to ask.

The four things that move the price
- Class level. Class 11 and 12 cost more than Class 6 for the straightforward reason that fewer tutors can teach them well. The gap widens for board and competitive-track students.
- Subject. Maths and Physics at senior level command more than general subjects at junior level. This is supply, not snobbery.
- Frequency. Fees are usually monthly and assume a number of sessions per week. Two sessions is the common baseline; the per-session rate often improves slightly at three.
- Travel. A tutor crossing Delhi in evening traffic is spending an unpaid hour. Tutors who live near you are cheaper for a reason that has nothing to do with quality.
Questions worth asking before the fee is agreed
Most disputes later come from things never discussed at the start. Settle these:
- How many sessions does the monthly fee cover, and what happens to sessions missed by the student?
- What happens to sessions missed by the tutor — made up, or credited?
- Is the fee per subject or for the slot? A tutor covering both Maths and Science in one hour is covering neither properly.
- Who provides practice material, and is it included?
- What is the notice period on either side?
- Will it be the same tutor every week? This matters more than families realise — a rotating tutor restarts the diagnosis every time.
Be wary of a fee quoted before anyone has assessed the student. A tutor who names a price without knowing whether the child needs foundation repair or exam polish is pricing a slot, not a plan. The first session should tell you what the real problem is — and occasionally that answer is that tuition is not what is needed.
Where paying less costs more
The cheapest arrangement is usually a group of several children taught together at a low per-head rate. That is genuinely good value for revision and homework discipline. It is poor value when a child has a specific gap, because the whole point of one-to-one is that the teaching bends to the student. Paying one-to-one rates for what is effectively supervised homework is the other side of the same mistake.
Where paying more is justified
A higher fee is defensible when it buys a tutor who can diagnose rather than merely teach, who is available for the same slot every week without renegotiation, and who tells you honestly when the sessions can be reduced. That last one is the clearest signal you are dealing with someone who is not simply protecting their income.
Questions parents ask
Why will nobody quote a fee over the phone?
Because the four factors above are not known yet. An honest quote follows a short conversation about class, subject, frequency and location. Anyone who quotes before that is guessing, and will revise it later.
Is online cheaper than at-home?
Often slightly, because travel disappears. The bigger saving is usually in time rather than money — families convert the saved travel into an extra session.
Should I pay monthly or per session?
Monthly is standard and generally works better for both sides, because it commits to a rhythm. Ask specifically how missed sessions are treated before agreeing.
Do fees rise mid-year?
They should not within an agreed term. They reasonably do when the student moves up a class, or when sessions per week increase. Confirm the position before you start.
Is a more expensive tutor always better?
No. Fees track scarcity, not skill. What you are checking for is whether the tutor can tell you specifically what is wrong after two sessions. That is the test worth applying.
Can we start with one subject and add more later?
Yes, and it is usually the sensible order. Fix one subject, see whether the approach works for your child, then extend.
