"He is improving" is not a report. What a useful monthly update actually contains.

A useful progress report names the specific weakness being worked on, what has changed in the last month, what has not, and what happens next. If your tutor cannot produce that in three sentences, either the diagnosis has not been made or the work is not being tracked — and both are worth knowing before the pre-boards tell you.

What a good report sounds like
Something close to this: "He was losing marks in physical chemistry because he was not writing the formula or the substitution, only the answer. That is largely fixed — the last two tests show full working. Organic mechanisms are still weak, particularly conversions with more than two steps, and that is the focus for the next month."
Specific weakness. Evidence of change. Honest about what remains. A named next step. Three sentences and a parent knows exactly where things stand.
What a poor report sounds like
- "He is doing well, just needs more practice." — no diagnosis, no evidence, no plan.
- "The syllabus is on track." — coverage is not learning, and a student can be on track and understanding nothing.
- "He is a bright boy, just careless." — careless is a category, not a finding. Careless about what, specifically?
- "Marks will improve after revision." — possibly, but that is a hope rather than a report.
Ask to see marked written work. It is the most honest single piece of evidence available and it takes a minute to look at. Corrections in the margin, marks awarded and lost, and a comment — if that does not exist, written answers are not being trained regardless of what the report says.
What to ask, and when
Once a month, not once a week. Weekly check-ins produce noise — a bad test in an ordinary week means very little and worrying about it wastes everyone’s attention. A month is long enough for a change to become visible and short enough to correct course.
- What is the main weakness right now, in one sentence?
- What changed this month, and how do you know?
- What has not changed, and why?
- What is the plan for the next four weeks?
How to read the answers
The quality you are testing is specificity, not optimism. A tutor who reports honestly that something is not working yet is giving you far more useful information than one who reports steady progress every month — and steady progress reported every month, with no test results behind it, is the pattern to be suspicious of.
Questions parents ask
Is monthly too infrequent?
For a settled arrangement, no. In the first six weeks a shorter check makes sense, because that is when a mismatch is worth catching.
Should the student be present for these conversations?
Usually yes, from Class 9 upward. It keeps the report honest and it makes the student a participant rather than a subject.

Enthusiastic but rarely useful. Ask for the four questions above once a month instead — volume of communication is not the same as information.
What if the report is honest and the marks still are not moving?
Then you have a real conversation to have, with real information in it. That is much better than being surprised in February.
