For most Class 12 students, two chemistry sessions a week is the honest answer, and three is the ceiling beyond which tuition starts eating the private study time that actually consolidates learning. But the number is the wrong place to start. What decides it is which of the three chemistry strands is weak and whether the student is doing any work between sessions at all.

Why the hours question is usually the wrong one
When a parent asks how many hours are needed, the worry underneath is almost always the same: the marks are not moving and something must be missing. More hours feels like the lever. It rarely is.
Chemistry at Class 12 is three subjects sharing a name. Physical chemistry is numerical work. Organic is mechanism and pattern. Inorganic is structured recall. A student is very seldom weak at all three, and a single averaged chemistry mark hides which one is failing. Adding a third weekly session that spends its time on the two strands the student was already fine at will change nothing except the bill.
What the honest answer depends on
One session a week
Enough for a student who is broadly on track and needs the pace kept up, the doubts cleared, and a test set before the school does. It is maintenance, not repair.
Two sessions a week
The realistic default for Class 12. One session carries new material at the school pace; the second is practice, numericals and correction. Most students who move from the mid-sixties to the eighties do it on two.
Three sessions a week
Justified when a genuine gap has to be closed while the school keeps moving — typically a student who never settled the mole concept in Class 11 and is now meeting electrochemistry. It should be temporary. Once the gap closes, drop back to two.
Beyond three a week the returns turn negative. Chemistry is consolidated by a student sitting alone with past papers and getting things wrong in private. A timetable with four tuition sessions leaves no room for that, and produces a student who follows explanations well and cannot start a question on their own.
The question to ask instead
Ask the tutor which of the three strands your child is weakest in, and what specifically they are doing about it this month. A tutor who has been teaching your child for three weeks and cannot answer that precisely is not diagnosing, and the number of hours will not fix that.
- Which strand is weak, in one sentence.
- What the plan for it is over the next four weeks.
- What the student is expected to do between sessions.
- When you will see evidence it is working, and what that evidence looks like.
What should happen between sessions
This is the part that decides whether two hours a week is enough. A session that ends without the student knowing exactly what to practise before the next one has wasted most of its value.
For chemistry that usually means a short set of numericals for physical, a fixed number of conversions or mechanisms for organic, and a revision block for inorganic that gets tested at the start of the following session. It does not have to be long. It has to be specific and it has to be checked.
Questions parents ask
My child already has school plus coaching. Is a home tutor too much?
Very possibly. If the student has no unstructured study time left, adding tuition makes the timetable worse rather than the marks better. It is worth auditing the week honestly before adding to it.
Is 90 minutes better than 60?
For Class 12 chemistry, generally yes — numericals and mechanisms need a run at them, and an hour often ends mid-problem. For Classes 9 and 10, 60 minutes is usually the better unit.
Should the sessions be on consecutive days?
No. Spacing them gives the student time to attempt the practice and arrive with real doubts rather than remembered ones.
We are three months from boards and starting late. What then?
Three a week temporarily, aimed narrowly at the highest-weight chapters and past papers, is defensible. Starting late is a reason to be selective, not to be exhaustive.
