Two sessions a week is right for most Class 12 students, and the second one should be practice under supervision rather than fresh teaching. Maths does need volume — but the volume has to come from the student working alone, with the tutor catching the errors. A timetable that fills every evening with tuition removes the very thing maths marks are built on.

Why maths is different from the other subjects
Maths is not learned by understanding an explanation. It is learned by attempting a problem, getting stuck, and finding out why. A student can follow every step a tutor writes and still be unable to start the same question forty minutes later, and that gap between following and doing is where almost all lost marks live.
That has a direct consequence for how many sessions to buy. The tutor cannot do the practice for the student. What the tutor can do is watch the practice happen and intervene at the exact moment the method goes wrong — which is why the second weekly session is better spent on supervised problems than on new chapters.
What each session should be doing
Session one — teach and demonstrate
The concept, then one fully worked example, then a second example the student attempts with prompting. This session should stay slightly ahead of school where possible so the classroom lesson becomes revision rather than first contact.
Session two — supervised practice
The student works; the tutor watches and says almost nothing until something goes wrong. This is the session parents are most tempted to cut because it looks less like teaching. It is the one that moves marks.
Step marks are real and students give them away. A Class 12 answer that reaches the correct value with three steps missing scores less than a wrong answer with correct working. That habit is only visible while a student is writing, which is the whole argument for supervised practice.
When three sessions is the right call
Temporarily, and for a named reason. The most common legitimate one is a student carrying an algebra gap from Class 9 or 10 into Class 12 calculus — the gap has to be closed while the school syllabus keeps moving, which genuinely needs extra hours for a few weeks.
- A specific, identified gap — not general weakness.
- A plan with an end date, not an open-ended increase.
- Evidence checked after four weeks before continuing.
How to tell it is working
Not by asking the student whether they understood. Almost everyone says yes. Ask instead for a question from last week to be attempted cold, with the book shut. A student who can start it has learned something; a student who needs the first line prompted has not, and the sessions need re-aiming rather than multiplying.
Questions parents ask
Is one session a week ever enough for Class 12 maths?
For a strong student who practises reliably, yes. It becomes a checkpoint and doubt-clearing hour rather than teaching. For anyone who is behind, one is not enough to both teach and correct.
Should maths tuition run through the holidays?
Holidays are the best time to close old gaps, because the school syllabus is not moving. It is the single most useful block of tuition in the year and the most commonly skipped.
My child says they understand in the session and forget by the next day.
That is the following-versus-doing gap, and it means the sessions are too heavy on explanation and too light on the student working. Ask for the balance to change.
Can one tutor handle both maths and physics?
Sometimes at Class 11 and 12, but check rather than assume. The overlap in method is real; the depth in each subject is not automatic.
