Two, in most cases — and what those two hours are spent on matters more than adding a third.

Two physics sessions a week suits most Class 12 students: one carrying new material and derivations, one on numericals with the tutor watching the working. A third is justified only while a specific gap is being closed, and beyond three the sessions start displacing the independent problem-solving that physics marks are actually built on.
| Typical | Two a week |
|---|---|
| Best split | One theory and derivations, one numericals supervised |
| Third session | Only while closing a named gap |
| What decides it | Whether the student attempts problems alone |

What each session should carry
Session one — concept and derivation
The chapter’s idea, then the standard derivations written out in order. Derivations are predictable, repeated and worth full marks, and they are the part students most often postpone.
Session two — numericals, watched
The student works and the tutor watches. Physics numericals are marked in pieces and the pieces get dropped when a student computes mentally — which is only visible while they write.
If both sessions are the tutor explaining, the second one is largely wasted. Physics is learned by attempting problems and being corrected at the point of error, not by watching solutions appear. Ask what proportion of the hour your child spends writing.
When a third is genuinely warranted
When there is a named gap being closed on a deadline — typically a Class 11 mechanics weakness surfacing in Class 12 rotational or electrical work. Temporary, with an end date, and reviewed after four weeks.
Not as a general response to disappointing marks. If the diagnosis is pacing or presentation, a third teaching hour addresses neither.
What has to happen between sessions
- A set number of numericals attempted alone, written in full.
- One derivation rehearsed from memory.
- Doubts written down as they arise, with the question reference.
- The practical file kept current, not saved up.
Without that, two sessions a week becomes two hours of watching, and no number of hours fixes that.
The physics-specific warning
Physics is the subject where students most often feel they understand and cannot perform. The understanding is real; the ability to produce a full solution under time is separate and is trained only by producing full solutions under time. Sessions that never require that are pleasant and ineffective.
Questions parents ask
Is one session a week enough?
For a strong student who works independently, yes. For anyone behind, one hour cannot both teach and correct.
Should physics and maths be the same tutor?
Sometimes workable at Class 11 and 12; the methods overlap. Check rather than assume, particularly on derivations.
My child has coaching as well.
Then audit the week honestly. If there is no time left for solo problem-solving, adding hours will not help.
How long should a session be?
Ninety minutes suits Class 12 physics better than sixty — numericals and derivations need a run at them.
