The fee difference is visible. The other costs are not, and they usually decide the outcome.

A group session is cheaper per hour and a one-to-one session is cheaper per mark gained, but only when there is a real gap to close. The comparison parents usually make — fee against fee — leaves out the two costs that actually matter: how much of the hour is spent on your child, and how long a weakness survives undetected.

Counting the hour honestly

In a group of six, your child gets roughly a sixth of the questioning and a sixth of the correction, though they hear all of the explanation. Whether that is a bad deal depends entirely on whether your child needs the explanation or needs the correction.

For a student who follows explanations easily and makes errors in execution, the group hour delivers the part they do not need and rations the part they do. That is the actual arithmetic, and it does not appear on any fee sheet.

The cost of a gap surviving

This is the expensive one. A Class 12 student who never settled the mole concept can attend four months of group chemistry, understand every session, and still be unable to start an unfamiliar stoichiometry question in the pre-board. Nobody in the group format is positioned to notice, because the student is not failing visibly — they are following.

Four months is a large fraction of the year. Measured against that, the fee difference between formats stops being the main number.

The counter-argument is real and worth stating. In a one-to-one setting a weak tutor is not diluted by anything. In a group, a mediocre teacher is partly compensated by peers, by pace, and by the student hearing questions they would not have asked. If you cannot get a genuinely good tutor, a good class beats a poor tutor.

What a group format gives that one-to-one cannot

  • A benchmark. Seeing how others answer is information a student cannot get alone, and it is often the first honest signal that their own answers are thin.
  • Pace and accountability that a tutor has to manufacture artificially.
  • Questions the student would never have asked, answered because somebody else asked them.
  • Cost, plainly — it is cheaper, and for a student who is coping that may simply be the right call.

The decision, in order

Ask whether your child’s problem is drift or a gap. Drift responds to structure, and a group provides structure more cheaply. A gap responds only to somebody stopping and finding it, and a group cannot stop.

If you genuinely cannot tell, that itself is an argument for a few weeks of one-to-one — a proper diagnostic session will tell you which situation you are in, and that answer is useful whichever format you then choose.

Questions parents ask

Is a group of two or three a good middle ground?

It can be, if the two students are genuinely at the same level in the same subject. Where they are not, the smaller group tends to serve the weaker student and bore the stronger one.

My child is in a group and says it is going fine.

Test it rather than take it. Give them an unfamiliar past-paper question, cold. Following a class and being able to start a question are different things.

Does one-to-one make a student dependent on the tutor?

It can, if the tutor talks for the whole hour. A tutor who makes the student work while they watch produces the opposite.

Can we start one-to-one and move to a group later?

That is often the right sequence — close the gap individually, then use a group for pace and benchmarking once the student can keep up.

What do fees look like?

They depend on class, frequency and format. Call +91 92121 42427 for a figure against your requirement.
