Two students can share a chemistry tutor productively when they are in the same class, on the same board, and at genuinely similar levels. Where any of those three differs, the session tends to serve one child and waste the other’s hour — most often serving the weaker one while the stronger disengages.

The three conditions
Same class
Obvious, and the one families are least tempted to break. A Class 10 and a Class 12 student cannot share a chemistry hour usefully.
Same board
Less obvious and frequently broken. CBSE and ISC reward different answers, and a tutor teaching to one is teaching the other student the wrong presentation.
Similar level
The hardest to judge and the most important. A gap of fifteen marks between two students means the session pitches at one of them, and the other is either lost or bored.
When the levels differ, the session almost always serves the weaker student. That is the humane instinct and it means the stronger one is paying to watch. Families notice this several months in, usually when the stronger student’s marks have quietly stopped moving.
What is actually lost in a pair
The diagnostic work. A one-to-one tutor watches one student write and intervenes at the moment of error. With two, that attention halves and the intervention becomes generic — which removes the specific advantage you are paying for.
For chemistry in particular, where the whole task is identifying which of three strands is weak in this specific student, a shared session makes the diagnosis harder rather than merely slower.
The better arrangement
Two consecutive individual slots with the same tutor. The travel happens once, the tutor is already there, and each child gets undivided attention. It costs more than a shared hour and considerably less than two separate visits, and it is usually the arrangement families settle on eventually.
For siblings in different classes this is the only sensible structure.
When sharing is genuinely fine
Two students in the same class and board, at similar levels, working through past papers together with the tutor marking and correcting. At that stage the session is practice rather than teaching, and a second student adds discussion rather than dividing attention.

Then a shared chemistry session will not work. Consecutive slots are the practical answer.
Would a friend of the same class work better than a sibling?
Only if the levels genuinely match. Same class is necessary and not sufficient.
Is the fee halved?
Usually reduced rather than halved, since the tutor prepares for two. Ask specifically before assuming.
Can we start shared and split later?
Yes, and it is worth agreeing in advance what would trigger the split — typically one student’s marks not moving.
