Fees and timing matter, but they are the two things you will find out anyway. The questions worth spending the call on are the ones that predict whether this will work: which board, which chemistry strand, whether written work gets marked, and whether the same tutor stays. Asking those four takes three minutes and filters out most bad matches.

The four questions that predict the outcome
- "Which board will the tutor be matched on?" CBSE, ICSE and ISC reward different answers to the same chemistry. This is the single most important matching criterion at Class 11 and 12 and it is the one most often skipped.
- "How will you work out which chemistry strand my child is weak in?" A good answer describes looking at marked papers. A vague answer means the diagnosis will not happen.
- "Will written work be marked every week?" If nothing is written and corrected, board answer writing is not being trained regardless of how good the teaching is.
- "Will it be the same tutor throughout?" A rotating tutor restarts the diagnosis each time and the student re-explains their own weaknesses to a stranger.
What to tell them, unprompted
The call goes better if you volunteer the things that actually decide the match.
- Class and board, including if the child has switched boards recently.
- Which subjects are weak, and what the last two assessments looked like.
- Two or three time slots that genuinely work — not one.
- Anything unusual: a long gap, a difficult year, an upcoming entrance exam.
Offering one fixed slot rules out most of the specialist pool before anyone has discussed chemistry. Slot flexibility is worth more than almost anything else you can bring to the conversation, and it is the thing parents most often treat as non-negotiable.
The question that reveals the most
Ask what happens in the first session. A provider who says teaching starts immediately has skipped the diagnosis. A provider who describes working through recent marked papers to separate concept from method from presentation has told you they know what they are doing.
What matters less than parents think
Years of experience and qualification level, taken alone. A tutor with a doctorate who has never taught the board paper can teach correct chemistry and let your child write answers that lose marks. Ask about the board and the marking scheme rather than about credentials, which are easier to state and less predictive.

Should we ask for a demo class?
Ask what the first session covers. A genuine diagnostic session serves the same purpose and tells you more than a rehearsed demo.
Is it rude to ask these questions?
No, and a good provider will welcome them. They are questions about the job.
How long should the call take?
Ten minutes is plenty if both sides are specific. Most of it should be them asking you questions.
What if we do not know which strand is weak?
That is normal and it is the tutor’s job to find out. What matters is that they have a method for finding out.
