
Practice fixes execution. It does nothing for a concept gap, and it makes a confidence problem worse.

More practice is the default advice in maths and it is right about a third of the time. It fixes execution problems — a student who understands but is slow or careless. It does very little for a student who does not understand the idea, and it actively damages a student who has stopped believing they can do maths at all.

Three different problems, one prescription
Cannot start the question
A concept or recognition gap. More practice means more failed attempts, which teaches nothing and costs confidence. This needs teaching, not repetition.
Starts confidently and makes errors
An execution problem, and this is where practice genuinely works. Volume, timed, with strict marking.
Refuses to start, or gives up quickly
Usually confidence, sometimes avoidance of a specific topic. Practice makes this worse. It needs early wins on questions the student can definitely do, which is the opposite of what most parents instinctively assign.
Assigning fifty questions to a student who cannot start any of them is not practice. It is fifty repetitions of failure, and it teaches the student something about themselves that is both untrue and hard to undo.
How to tell which one you have
Sit with the student and watch them attempt one unfamiliar question. Do not help. Where the difficulty appears answers the question in about five minutes.
- Blank page, no first line — concept or recognition.
- Correct start, errors partway — execution.
- Starts, stops, says "I cannot do this" before really trying — confidence.
What to do instead of more practice
For concept gaps, teaching aimed narrowly at the specific idea, then a small number of questions to confirm. For confidence, a deliberate run of questions the student will get right, which sounds patronising and works. For execution, then practise in volume — that is where the standard advice belongs.
Why this matters more in maths
Because maths is the subject where students most readily conclude they are simply not capable, and where that belief is most self-fulfilling. Prescribing volume to a student in that state confirms the belief. Getting the diagnosis right first is not a nicety; it decides whether the year improves.
Questions parents ask
Our tutor keeps saying more practice.
Ask which of the three problems they think it is and why. A tutor who has watched the student work will have a specific answer.
My child does lots of questions and does not improve.
That pattern strongly suggests the problem is not execution. Watch one attempt and it usually becomes clear.
How many questions is enough for an execution problem?
Volume genuinely matters there — regular, timed, marked. It is the one case where the standard advice is right.
Is confidence really a separate problem?
Yes, and it responds to a different intervention. Treating it as laziness or as a knowledge gap both fail.
