Changing too early wastes the diagnosis. Changing too late wastes the year. The signals are different and they are readable.

Change the tutor when they cannot tell you specifically what is wrong with your child’s chemistry after three or four sessions. Give it another month when they can tell you precisely, the plan makes sense, and the marks simply have not caught up yet — because they lag the work by roughly a term.

What to expect in the first three sessions

Very little teaching, and that is correct. A good first session works through recent marked papers to separate four things parents experience as one problem: the student does not understand the idea, or understands it but cannot execute the steps, or does both and loses marks on presentation, or does everything right until the clock is running.

By session three or four a tutor should be able to tell you which of those it is, in a sentence, without hedging. That is the single most useful test of whether the arrangement is working, and it is available long before any mark changes.

Reasons to change now, not later

  • They cannot name the weakness. After three or four sessions, "he needs more practice" is not a diagnosis, it is a way of not having one.
  • Board mismatch. A tutor teaching CBSE answer style to an ISC student is costing marks while teaching correct chemistry. This is common and fixable only by changing.
  • Written work is never corrected. If nobody has marked your child’s handwriting-on-paper answers strictly, presentation errors are compounding invisibly.
  • The student never works during the session. An hour of watching a tutor solve problems produces a student who can watch problems being solved.
  • Chronic lateness or cancellations. A slot that moves every week has stopped being a routine, and routine is most of what tuition provides.

Say what is wrong before you change. A large share of failing arrangements are fixed by one specific conversation — ask for more supervised practice, or for the ISC marking scheme, or for written work to be corrected. A tutor who responds to that is worth keeping; one who does not has answered your question.

Reasons to wait

Marks lag the work. A gap closed in September shows up in a December test, not an October one, because the intervening tests are still drawing on material learned before the change. Judging a tutor by the first test after they start is judging them on somebody else’s teaching.

Also wait if the student’s attitude has shifted even where the marks have not. A child who has started attempting questions they would previously have skipped is improving in the way that eventually produces marks.

How to change well if you do

Say what specifically did not work. "It was not working out" gives the next match nothing to go on; "he needs someone who will make him write, and we are on ISC" produces a genuinely better second attempt. The information you have gathered is the most valuable thing to come out of a failed arrangement.

And change once, decisively. A student who has had three tutors in a term spends every session re-explaining their own weaknesses to a stranger instead of working on them.

Questions parents ask

How long before we should expect to see better marks?

Roughly a term for a genuine change to show in school assessments. Behaviour changes — attempting harder questions, working without prompting — appear much sooner and are the better early signal.

My child does not like the tutor. Is that enough reason?

It depends what "does not like" means. Being made to work is often disliked and is exactly what should be happening. Being made to feel stupid is different and is a reason to change immediately.

Should we tell the tutor we are considering a change?

Yes, with the specific reason. It frequently fixes the problem, and if it does not, you have been fair.

Is it disruptive to change mid-year?

Less than persisting with something that is not working. The cost of a bad match compounds; the cost of a change is a few weeks.

Can we ask for a different tutor from the same provider?

Yes, and it is usually the fastest route because the requirement is already understood. Tell us what specifically was missing.
