GATE Chemistry (CY) Coaching: The Paper, the Score and How to Prepare

In short: GATE Chemistry (CY) is a three-hour, 100-mark computer-based paper. Fifteen marks are general aptitude and 85 are chemistry, asked as single-answer, multiple-select and numerical questions. The score is used for MTech and PhD admissions, for some public-sector recruitment, and for postgraduate scholarships. It stays valid for three years.

Why chemists take GATE

GATE is organised each year by one of the IITs or IISc on behalf of the national coordination board. For chemistry graduates the CY paper serves three purposes. It opens PhD and some MTech admissions at the IITs, IISc and many universities. Several public-sector organisations use it in recruitment. And GATE-qualified students admitted to eligible postgraduate programmes can receive a scholarship. Because a score stays valid for three years, some students sit GATE in the same season as IIT-JAM or CSIR-NET simply to keep options open. The overlap in syllabus makes that realistic.

The paper at a glance

ComponentMarksNotes
General aptitude15Verbal, quantitative and analytical reasoning; common to every GATE paper
Chemistry85Physical, organic and inorganic chemistry
Total10065 questions in 3 hours, computer-based

Questions come in three forms. These are multiple choice with one answer, multiple select, and numerical answer. Only the single-answer multiple-choice questions carry negative marking. Check the current year's GATE information brochure for dates, eligibility and the exact syllabus before you plan.

How GATE differs from JAM and NET

GATE CY sits between the other two in depth. It is more demanding than IIT-JAM in physical chemistry, especially quantum chemistry, spectroscopy and statistical thermodynamics. It is less sprawling than CSIR-NET Part C. Physical chemistry usually carries a large share of the chemistry marks, and much of it arrives as numerical-answer questions. That makes accurate, unit-careful calculation the most valuable single skill. Organic chemistry rewards mechanism and stereochemistry fluency. Inorganic rewards coordination chemistry, main-group structures and organometallics.

A preparation outline that works

  1. Start with the official syllabus. Mark each topic as strong, shaky or new, and plan the shaky and new ones first.
  2. Solve every past CY paper you can get, by topic first and then as full timed papers.
  3. Do numerical practice every week. Physical chemistry numerical questions forgive nothing.
  4. Don't skip aptitude. Fifteen marks is a lot to give away. A short daily routine is enough.
  5. Spend the final six to eight weeks on revision and full mocks, with an honest review of each one.

What to look for in GATE coaching

Look for a written schedule that covers the full CY syllabus with time to spare. You also want regular numerical-answer practice, full-length tests under real timing, and a teacher you can reach with doubts. Online coaching suits many GATE aspirants, who are often finishing an MSc or working. Recordings let them fit classes around fixed commitments. Ask for a demo class before you pay. How a teacher explains one hard topic tells you most of what you need.

Common questions

Can I take GATE CY in my final B.Sc. year?

Eligibility rules have been widened in recent years, and students in the third year of an undergraduate degree have generally been allowed to appear. The rules for each year are in that year's GATE brochure. Check them there rather than relying on older advice.

Is it sensible to prepare for GATE and CSIR-NET together?

Usually, yes. The chemistry overlaps heavily. The main differences are format and depth: GATE uses numerical-answer questions, and NET's Part C asks harder multi-step problems. A single plan with a few weeks of exam-specific practice before each paper is common.

How long does a GATE score stay useful?

A GATE score is valid for three years from the date of the result, though each institute or employer decides how it uses scores within that window.

How ABC Chemistry teaches GATE CY

ABC Chemistry teaches GATE Chemistry in 6-month batches, in the classroom at the Gurugram Sector 113 centre or live online. Mr. Aniket Bhardwaj teaches both modes. See the GATE Chemistry page and the fees page for the current batch and fee. A free demo can be booked through the enquiry form.
