The Income Tax Department, functioning under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in the Ministry of Finance, administers direct tax laws in India. Its Group A officers (Indian Revenue Service) are recruited through UPSC's Civil Services Examination, while Group B and C posts such as Income Tax Inspector, Tax Assistant and Multi-Tasking Staff are filled through the Staff Selection Commission's CGL and MTS exams. Separately, each regional office periodically runs its own sports-quota recruitment for meritorious sportspersons, notified directly on the department's own website.

Income Tax Dept recruits mainly through a written competitive examination, or a specific quota (for example sports, compassionate appointment, or ex-servicemen), or direct recruitment, without a competitive exam. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group B/C.
