A parent’s guide to the three places middle-school English marks disappear — and why more reading, on its own, does not bring them back.
Almost every parent who asks about English tuition says the same sentence first: “but my child speaks English perfectly.” That is usually true and almost never the issue. Spoken fluency and written accuracy are separate skills, and the paper tests the second one. Because families hear confident speech at home every day, the written problem is normally discovered only when a marked paper comes back — often two or three years after it started.

The three places marks go
1. The unseen passage
The single most common error is answering from memory of a similar passage instead of from this one. The student recognises the topic, recalls something they already know about it, and writes that. It reads plausibly and earns very little, because the marks are for what this particular passage says. The fix is mechanical: locate the answer in the text, point at it, then write it — every time, until it stops feeling like an extra step.
2. The writing section
Notice, letter, paragraph, story — each has a format, and the format itself carries marks. Content that would earn full marks in the wrong shape does not. This is genuinely good news for a struggling student, because format is learnable in a fortnight in a way that vocabulary is not.
3. Literature answers
Middle school is where retelling the story stops being enough. The question asks why a character did something, and the answer that summarises what they did earns part of the mark at best. Answers have to point to the text rather than around it.
Why grammar drills alone do not move the score
Most students in Classes 6 to 8 can name a tense correctly in an exercise and still use the wrong one in a paragraph written under time pressure. Knowing a rule and applying it are different skills, and the second is only built where the rule is actually needed — in the student’s own writing, corrected. Worksheets test the first and quietly leave the second untouched, which is why a child can complete pages of grammar and see no change in their marks.
A two-minute check at home: give your child any short paragraph they have not seen and one question whose answer is definitely inside it. If they answer from general knowledge rather than from the paragraph, you have found the problem — and it is the most common one in middle-school English.
What actually changes it
- Writing produced in the session, not at home, so the tutor sees how it is built rather than only how it turned out.
- Correction on the student’s own sentences, then the same piece rewritten. The rewrite is where the learning happens.
- Formats practised until they are automatic, so no marks are lost to layout under exam pressure.
- Comprehension answered with the passage open and the answer physically located before it is written.
Why Classes 6 to 8 and not Class 9
Class 9 assumes writing structure is already in place and does not stop to teach it. Middle school is the last stretch where it can be built without exam pressure on top — and it is also when a child will still happily rewrite a paragraph, which they are markedly less willing to do at fifteen.
My child reads a lot of books. Should that not be enough?
Reading builds vocabulary, comfort and ear for language, all of which help. It does not teach the layout of a notice, the structure of a formal letter, or how to support a literature answer with evidence. Those are exam skills and they are learnt by writing and being corrected.
Do you teach spoken English or personality development?
No. This is academic English for school examinations. Spoken-English coaching is a different service and is not offered here.
Is online tuition workable for English?
It works particularly well, because the whole subject is text that tutor and student can annotate together on screen. Written work is shared, corrected and rewritten inside the session.
My child is in Class 8 with no board exam. Can this wait a year?
It can, and it is the most common reason students struggle in Class 9. Class 9 assumes the writing habit exists. Building it now costs less time than repairing it later under board pressure.
