The Class 10 science practical component is assessed separately from the theory paper and is among the most controllable marks in the board year. It rewards a complete record, genuine observations and being able to explain your own experiments — none of which require solving unfamiliar problems in three hours.

What the record is judged on
- Completeness — every prescribed experiment present and dated.
- Genuine observations, including readings that did not agree. Uniform perfect data reads as copied.
- Correct structure — aim, materials, procedure, observation, result, precautions.
- Diagrams where relevant, ruled and labelled properly.
- Calculations shown, not only results.
Write each entry in the week the experiment is performed. It takes twenty minutes while the details are fresh, it produces a record that reads as authentic because it is, and it removes an entire source of pressure from the weeks before the board exam. A file written in one night is visible as one.
The viva is drawn from your own work
Expect to be asked what an experiment was for, why a particular material or indicator was used, what an observation indicated, and what a precaution prevents. Every one of those is answerable by a student who performed the experiment attentively and wrote their own entry.
Students who copied a friend’s record are exposed here more than anywhere else, because they are being asked about readings they never took.
The strands within it
The practical work spans all three science strands, and students tend to be comfortable in the same strand they are comfortable in on paper. That is worth noticing — a student weak in physics numericals will usually also find the physics experiments harder, and preparing those specifically is more efficient than spreading effort evenly.
Why it deserves attention now
Because it is the part of the board year most within the student’s control. It does not depend on speed, on handling unfamiliar questions, or on performing on one particular morning. For a student who finds the theory paper difficult, this is where a solid, reliable score is genuinely achievable — and it is disproportionately those students who leave the record until it is too late to do well.
Ask the school for the current scheme for your child’s session rather than assuming what applied previously; practical schemes are revised from time to time.
Questions parents ask
How much is the practical worth?
A meaningful separately assessed portion, and it varies by board and session. Ask the school for the current scheme.
My child missed some experiments at school.
Raise it early — schools usually allow the work to be made up when asked in time and have fewer options later.
Can a home tutor help with this?
With the theory, the record format, calculations and viva preparation, substantially. The bench work belongs at school.
Does copying a friend’s record matter?
It shows in the record and it fails in the viva, where the questions are about readings the student never took.
