Why Senior Chemistry Needs a Specialist, Not Your Maths Tutor

One tutor for everything works until about Class 10. At Class 11 it quietly stops working, and the marks show it a term later.

Up to Class 10 a capable all-rounder is genuinely the better choice — consistency and knowing the child matter more than subject depth. From Class 11, chemistry becomes three specialisms in one subject and the depth required stops being something a strong generalist can carry. The switch is worth making before the marks force it.

What changes at Class 11

Three things at once. The volume roughly doubles. The questions stop testing recall and start testing application to unfamiliar situations. And the subject splits into physical, organic and inorganic, each with its own way of being learned — numerical fluency, mechanistic reasoning, and structured memory respectively.

A strong generalist can carry one of those. Carrying all three, at the depth Class 12 asks for, alongside another subject, is a genuinely different job. This is not a criticism of generalists; it is what senior secondary is designed to demand.

How the shortfall shows up

Rarely as an obvious failure. More often as a student who is fine on textbook questions and stalls on the board paper, because the generalist taught what the chapter says and the specialist would have taught what the examiner asks.

The most common version of this in Class 12: a maths tutor who is comfortable with physical chemistry because it is numerical, and quietly avoids organic. The student ends the year strong in a third of the subject.

The practical objection, answered

Two tutors mean two slots, two fees and two schedules, and in a busy week that is a real cost. But the alternative is not one tutor doing two subjects well — it is one tutor doing one subject well and the other adequately, and adequately does not survive a board paper.

Where the budget genuinely allows only one specialist, put it where the gap is biggest rather than splitting the difference. One subject taught properly beats two taught partially.

What to ask when hiring

Questions parents ask

Our tutor has taught our child since Class 6 and they get on well.

That relationship is genuinely valuable and worth keeping for the subjects they are strong in. It is not a reason to keep senior chemistry with them if chemistry is not their subject.

Can one tutor do physics and chemistry?

More plausibly than maths and chemistry, because physical chemistry overlaps with physics. Organic chemistry is the part to ask about specifically.

At what point exactly should we switch?

Before Class 11 begins, ideally. The first term of Class 11 sets the foundation the whole two years rest on, and it is a poor time to be discovering a mismatch.

Is a specialist more expensive?

Usually somewhat, at senior level. Measured per mark rather than per hour it is generally the cheaper option where the subject actually matters to your child’s plans.

What if we cannot find a specialist locally?

Online one-to-one widens the pool considerably and works well from Class 9 upward. It is a better answer than a nearby generalist for senior chemistry.
