Raj Yoga in a birth chart: reading auspicious house lords

By Aniket Bhardwaj · 7 November 2026 · Janam Kundli Blog

This post shows you how to spot a Raj Yoga in a birth chart by looking at house lords.

You will learn what kendra and trikona houses are, how their lords connect, and how to check your own chart step by step.

In short: A Raj Yoga is traditionally held to form when the lord of a kendra house (1, 4, 7, 10) is linked with the lord of a trikona house (1, 5, 9). The link can be by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs. It is read as an indication of support in the areas those houses cover, not as a promise of any result.

Start with the words: house, lord, kendra, trikona

A kundli has twelve houses. Each house falls in one zodiac sign. The planet that rules that sign is called the house lord (bhavesh).

The tradition groups some houses together because of what they stand for.

The first house is both a kendra and a trikona. So the lord of the first house, called the lagna lord, is traditionally counted as a friend of the chart.

The lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. House 1 starts from it. If you do not know your lagna yet, generate your kundli first. Everything else in this post depends on it.

What makes a Raj Yoga

The word "Raj" means royal. The tradition says that when the houses of action and the houses of fortune are connected, the chart gains support. You look for a kendra lord and a trikona lord that are associated. Association has three common forms:

  1. Conjunction: both planets sit in the same house.
  2. Mutual aspect: the two planets look at each other. In the usual textbook rule, planets placed in opposite houses (7th from each other) aspect each other.
  3. Exchange (parivartana): each planet sits in the sign ruled by the other.

A planet that rules both a kendra house and a trikona house is called a yogakaraka. It carries the link by itself. Which planet does this depends on the lagna, so you must find it from your own chart.

The lagna lord is a special case. Since house 1 is both kendra and trikona, its lord joining a lord of house 4, 5, 7, 9 or 10 is also noted by teachers.

A worked example with house numbers

Do this exercise on paper before you open any tool. It is a practice case, not a real person. Suppose you have already counted the signs from the lagna and written down the lord of each house. Your list says this:

HouseTypeLord in this practice case
1Kendra and trikonaMars
4KendraMoon
5TrikonaSun
7KendraVenus
9TrikonaJupiter
10KendraSaturn

Now look for pairs. If Jupiter (9th lord) and Saturn (10th lord) sit in the same house, that is a trikona lord joined with a kendra lord. If Jupiter sits in the house opposite Saturn, they aspect each other, which is another form of the link. If the Sun (5th lord) and the Moon (4th lord) are together, that is a second pair. Each pair is noted separately.

The planets in the table change with every lagna. The method does not change. That is why a correct lagna comes first.

Checking it with the Yogas & Doshas tab

You can try this on your own birth details, or on any practice chart you have. On the free Janam Kundli page you enter date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. The chart is sidereal and uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the correction commonly used in Indian astrology.

Then follow these steps.

  1. Open the Charts tab. Look at Rashi (D1) in North Indian or South Indian style. Note which sign is the lagna.
  2. Write down the lords. Use the table method above. Mark the lords of houses 1, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10.
  3. Open the Planets and Houses tabs. Find where each of those lords sits. Two planets in the same house are in conjunction.
  4. Open the Yogas & Doshas tab. The page lists yogas and doshas with a plain explanation for each one. Read what is listed for your chart.
  5. Compare with your hand work. If you found a kendra-trikona pair yourself, see whether the tab mentions a matching yoga. If you cannot find it, recheck how you counted the houses.

Doing the work by hand first is the point. The tab then becomes a check on your learning, not a black box. I am not quoting a result for any chart here, because you learn more by reading the result on your own screen and tracing it back to the planets.

Reading a yoga with care

Finding a pair is only the first step. Teachers look at more things before saying anything about a yoga.

A Raj Yoga is not a guarantee of position, money or fame. It is traditionally read as a sign of support in the areas of life those houses cover. Effort, choices and circumstances matter more than any line in a chart.

Common beginner mistakes

Key takeaways

  • Kendra houses are 1, 4, 7 and 10. Trikona houses are 1, 5 and 9.
  • A Raj Yoga is traditionally held to form when a kendra lord and a trikona lord are linked by conjunction, aspect or exchange.
  • First fix the lagna, then list the lords, then find where they sit.
  • Use the Yogas & Doshas tab to check your hand work, and read any yoga along with planet strength and dasha.
  • A yoga is an indication, never a promise of results.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between kendra and trikona?

Kendra houses are 1, 4, 7 and 10, the "pillars" of the chart. Trikona houses are 1, 5 and 9, linked traditionally with merit and fortune. The first house belongs to both groups.

Does every chart have a Raj Yoga?

Not necessarily. It depends on whether a kendra lord and a trikona lord are linked in that chart. Some charts have none and some have more than one. The Yogas & Doshas tab shows what is listed for your chart.

Is the lagna lord part of a Raj Yoga?

The lagna is both a kendra and a trikona. So its lord is traditionally treated as a supportive planet, and its link with other kendra or trikona lords is read with interest.

Can I read a Raj Yoga without knowing my exact birth time?

It is risky. The lagna can change with a small difference in time, and then every house lord changes. Use the exact time of birth when you generate the kundli.

Does a Raj Yoga mean I will get a high post or wealth?

No. It is traditionally read as support in certain areas of life, not as a promise. Planet strength, dasha periods and your own effort all matter.
