A bookseller sells a book at a profit of $10 \%$. If he had bought it at 4\% less and sold it for ₹ 6 more, he would have gained $18 \frac{3}{4} \%$. The cost price of the book is
(a)₹ 130
(b)₹ 140
(c)₹ 150
(d)₹ 160
Answer
Answer (as printed): C
Explanation
Let C.P. of the book be ₹ 100. Profit $=10 \%$. S.P. $=₹ 110$. New C.P. $=4 \%$ less $=₹ 96$. If gain is $18 \frac{3}{4} \%$, then S.P. $=\left(118 \frac{3}{4} \%\right.$ of ₹ 96$)$ $$=₹\left(\frac{475}{4} \times \frac{1}{100} \times 96\right)=₹ 114 .$$ Difference in S.P. $=₹(114-110)=₹ 4$. If difference in S.P. is ₹ 4, C.P. = ₹ 100. If difference in S.P. is ₹ 6, C.P. $=₹\left(\frac{100}{4} \times 6\right)=₹ 150$.
