Explanation
Let each side of the square be $a$ cm and the radius of the semi-circle be $r$ cm. Then, $a^{2}=40 \mathrm{cm}^{2}$. $r^{2}=a^{2}+\left(\frac{a}{2}\right)^{2}=a^{2}+\frac{a^{2}}{4}=\frac{5 a^{2}}{4}=\left(\frac{5 \times 40}{4}\right)=50$. ∴ Area of the semi-circle $=\frac{\pi r^{2}}{2}=\left(\pi \times \frac{50}{2}\right) \mathrm{cm}^{2}-(25 \pi) \mathrm{cm}^{2}$.
