UGC-NET is the national eligibility test conducted by the National Testing Agency on behalf of the University Grants Commission, held twice a year, to determine eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor and/or the award of a Junior Research Fellowship, and/or admission to PhD, in Indian universities and colleges. It is an eligibility test, not a recruitment exercise itself — universities and colleges separately advertise and fill their own Assistant Professor vacancies against candidates who hold a valid NET/JRF.

UGC-NET recruits mainly through a written competitive examination. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group A/B.
