Half-Yearly Exam Preparation: A Six-Week Plan for Classes 9 to 12

Half-yearlies in Delhi schools fall through late September and October. Here is what six honest weeks of preparation look like — and what to stop doing.

Most students prepare for half-yearlies by re-reading. Re-reading feels productive and changes almost nothing, because the exam does not ask you to recognise material — it asks you to produce it, in writing, against a clock. A six-week plan built on written retrieval beats twelve weeks of reading, every time.

Applies toClasses 9, 10, 11 and 12
BoardsCBSE, ICSE, ISC
WindowRoughly six weeks before the school exam
Core methodWritten practice and correction, not re-reading

Week 1 — Find out what is actually weak

Before any revision, take one honest diagnostic per major subject: a past school paper, closed book, timed. It will be uncomfortable and it is the most useful hour of the six weeks. Mark it strictly and write down the chapters where marks were lost. Everything that follows is built on that list, not on a feeling about which chapters are difficult.

Week 2 and 3 — Close the gaps, one chapter at a time

Two chapters a week per subject is a realistic pace alongside school. Four is a fantasy that collapses by Wednesday.

Week 4 — Mixed practice

Chapter-wise practice creates a false sense of readiness, because the student always knows which method to apply. From week four, mix chapters within one sitting so that identifying the right approach becomes part of the exercise. This is where most of the real improvement happens.

Week 5 — Full papers under time

Two complete papers per subject, sat in one unbroken sitting with a clock. Not at midnight. Mark them the next morning with the marking scheme in hand and be ungenerous. The point is to find out where time runs out and where presentation costs marks — both are fixable in a week, neither is visible without a timed paper.

Week 6 — Consolidate, do not cram

What to stop doing

Stop highlighting. Stop copying notes neatly. Stop watching a fourth explanation video for a topic already understood. Stop revising the strongest subject because it feels pleasant. Each of these is effort without retrieval, and retrieval is what the exam measures.

Where a tutor helps most in these six weeks

Not in explaining more — in marking. A tutor who reads the student's actual answer sheet each week can see that the physics is right and the presentation is losing marks, or that the Biology answers are too short, or that the student is always ten minutes behind by the second section. That feedback loop is the entire value of one-to-one tuition during an exam run-up.

Questions parents ask

Six weeks is not available — we have three. What changes?

Skip straight to mixed practice and full papers, and accept that one or two weak chapters will be handled superficially. Timed paper practice is the one stage never to cut.

Should coaching or school homework be paused during this period?

No, but the balance shifts. School work continues; anything optional gives way to written practice on the diagnosed weak chapters.

How do half-yearly marks matter for a board-year student?

They set the internal record and, more usefully, they are the last realistic rehearsal before the boards. Treat the result as diagnostic information rather than a verdict.

Can you arrange a tutor just for this six-week period?

Yes. Short intensive engagements around an exam are common. Call and say how many weeks are left and which subjects are weak.
