Subject: General Aptitude · Chapter: Time and Distance · Exam: 2006 · Marks: · Difficulty:

Two places A and B are 80 km apart from each other on a highway. A car starts from A and another from B at the same time. If they move in the same direction they meet each other in 8 hours. If they move in opposite directions towards each other, they meet in 1 hour 20 minutes. Determine the speeds of the cars.
Answer
Answer (as printed):
Explanation
Let their speeds be x kmph and y kmph respectively. 80 Then, = 8 ⇒ x – y = 10 ...(i) x–y 80 1 4 And, = 1 = ⇒ x + y = 60 ...(ii) x+y 3 3 Adding (i) and (ii), we get : 2x = 70 or x = 35. Putting x = 35 in (i), we get : y = 25. Hence, the speeds of the two cars are 35 kmph and 25 kmph.
