The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), an attached office of the Ministry of Home Affairs established in 1986, is India’s central repository for crime and criminal data, responsible for the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), fingerprint records and the annual "Crime in India" report. NCRB’s workforce combines deputation from police cadres with directly-recruited technical/IT and statistical staff, whose vacancies (Technical Director, Programmer and similar) are notified on the Bureau’s own website as they arise, rather than through a fixed annual cycle.

NCRB recruits mainly through direct recruitment, without a competitive exam, or a direct interview, without a separate written exam. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group B.
