The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission conducts the Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Examination (commonly called PCS) for SDM, DSP, Block Development Officer and other Group A and B posts under the Government of Uttar Pradesh, in a Prelims-Mains-Interview format held annually. It also holds separate direct-recruitment examinations for forest, medical, engineering and teaching posts as departments requisition vacancies. UPPSC is headquartered in Prayagraj and is distinct from UPSSSC, which handles the state's subordinate (non-gazetted) recruitment.

UPPSC recruits mainly through a written competitive examination, or a written examination followed by an interview. Posts recorded here are commonly classified as Group A/B.
